Salah satu kriteria paling penting buat trader forex dalam memilih broker forex mana yang paling tepat adalah status regulasi broker forex tersebut. Broker forex yang melakukan aktivitas tanpa adanya regulasi bisa menimbulkan resiko terhadap keamanan uang investor. Mereka bisa berbuat apapun diluar hukum (out of law) yang bisa merugikan, khususnya para investor. Tujuan dari badan regulator ini adalah untuk mengawasi dan mengontrol seluruh aktivitas broker forex yang makin berkembang pesat. Selain itu, juga bertujuan untuk melindungi keamanan para investor.
Broker forex yang reputable setidaknya punya 1 regulasi yang mengaturnya. Makin banyak regulasi, makin bisa dipercaya broker forex tersebut. Selain regulasi, beberapa broker forex juga butuh keanggotaan (membership) dari badan-badan professional dan pemerintah, seperti Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID).
